United Nations Expert on Indigenous Peoples denounces human rights violations committed against the Charco la Pava community in Panama.

The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples, James Anaya, expressed concern over information received about abuses against indigenous community Panamanian "Charco la Pava," affected by the construction of a hydroelectric.

Anaya noted that the community was displaced from their land by force, lost their homes and crops were destroyed. In addition, condemned the excessive use of force and detention of those who opposed the construction of hydroelectric project, including women and children.

"My role as Special Rapporteur is essentially to monitor the living conditions of these peoples throughout the world and carry out any action that is in my power to overcome any obstacles that impede the full enjoyment of human rights of indigenous peoples", said Anaya.

The significance of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

It is a landmark victory for traditional owners and we have waited for over 30 years for our sea rights to be legally recognized.

The High Court has ruled Aborigines control more than 80 per cent of the Northern Territory coast, ending a 30-year battle for indigenous rights to the sea. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd called for calm following the landmark ruling, which has massive implications for Aboriginal people, governments and the fishing industry. It means traditional owners - from the East Alligator River in the Van Diemen Gulf to the Roper River in the Limmen Bight - have the power to exclude fishermen from the inter-tidal zone.

They will control where and when commercial and recreational fishing is carried out but not catch-sizes or limits. "It is a landmark victory for traditional owners and we have waited for over 30 years for our sea rights to be legally recognized", said Northern Land Council (NLC) chairman Wali Wunungmurra.

They rejected transgenic seeds, biofuels, experiments of marine fertilization, monoculture plantations and other models for mitigation and adaptation to climate change, because they destroy our lands, territories and resources and cause displacement and forced relocation of our peoples. We reiterate our call for a moratorium on genetically modified trees.

The installation of the government of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in Australia was framed by two important aspects: first, the end of the controversial 12-year period minister John Howard, and second, a request for forgiveness for the years of hardship and crime committed by the state indigenous peoples and the indignity and degradation perpetrated on a people and a culture full of pride, and mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters, to break families and communities. International Women's Day 2008: Investing in Women and Girls.

I appeal to men around the world to lead by example: to make clear that violence against women is itself something of that cowardly and and that is honorable for men, to stand against this violence. I appeal to Member States around the world, because in they lies primarily the responsibility. I urge you all to promise, along with me, to succeed together.

"When women have access to finance, credit, technologies and markets, tend to expand their businesses and contribute effectively to sustained economic growth and development. They Bring new perspectives and political decision-making", said the owner of the UN.
